The NMSI-sponsored ‘Jaku and the Earth Defenders’ mobile gallery has been making its way around schools in Accra. The gallery teaches children about different types of pollutants, the importance of community sanitation and how they can protect the environment by being Earth Defenders as well. On 31st May, the children of the Noyaa Academy were presented the ‘Jaku and The Earth Defenders’ gallery and learnt about how they can affect the environment. The visit proved to be another great collaboration between Noyaa and Environment360.

UK based Campbell Reith, the lead civil engineering consultants for the district hospitals on this Built To Care Ghana project, were last Thursday announced as the winners of the ICE ‘Engineered in London’ award. Yet further proof of the ground breaking work that is being achieved on this project.

On Thursday 14th April, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama visited the 4th hospital site from the Built To Care Ghana project, situated in Abetifi. The event was well attended with local leaders and district chiefs in attendance, as well as many of the workforce.
The visit was a chance for the President to see at first hand the progress that has been made on site.
Lead architects for the “Built To Care Ghana” district hospital programme, UK based TP Bennett, won the prestigious first prize for “Outstanding International Architecture Project” against still international competition at the 2016 British Expertise International Awards. The award celebrates the most influential architectural project with a focus on: innovative concept, strong local impact, meeting technical and cultural challenges, as well as creating a sustainable outcome. Congratulations to all involved!
The Ceremonial Handover was the perfect occasion to celebrate the excellent contribution made by all the local Ghanaian workforce involved in the build of the Hospital in Dodowa, with specific awards being presented to 6 outstanding members of the team, who excelled in their work.
The President personally presented each winner with a plaque and certificate to mark their achievements and it proved to be a fitting and well received moment during the ceremony.

William Tetteh – Building Foreman
Samuel Addo – Steel Worker
Emilia Barkey Tettah – Site Administrator
Sammy Okai Laryea – Provider of Resource and Building Services
The outstanding work of Site Manager, Francis Yore, was also recognised.
On Monday 4th April, the new award winning Shai Osudoku District Hospital in Dodowa was ceremonially handed over by the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama.
The event, hosted by the Ghanaian Ministry of Health, was extremely well attended by Ministers, Parliamentarians, Chiefs, Elders, site workers and the townsfolk, as well as many of the Ghanaian and British stakeholders involved in the project.
The event was also attended by the British MP and UK Minister for Africa, The Hon. James Duddridge, as well as British MP Adam Afriyie, the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Africa.
The Ceremonial Handover marks a key milestone for Ghana’s healthcare transformation.
The Ghana District Hospitals project is receiving great recognition in the UK for its impact. CampbellReith, consulting engineers for the hospitals, has been shortlisted for the ICE London Civil Engineering Awards 2016 and the New Civil Engineering Awards for its International Impact.
Mike Allen, Senior Partner at the Practice, said: “Being shortlisted has been fantastic recognition of the effort from all involved in the Ghana Hospitals project, which will hugely impact people’s lives”.
