June 2014 – Steelwork goes up at the Dodowa Hospital Site
June 2014 saw the first of the steelwork for the main building on the Dodowa Hospital Site going up.
On Monday 19th November 2012, the “Supply Contract” between the Ministry Of Health of Ghana and NMS Infrastructure Limited, for the design, construction and equipping of seven district hospitals, was signed by the Minister and the Chief Director of the Ministry of Health
Construction work begins on the Dodowa Hospital, marking a significant milestone for the project
The first shipment of 3 containers sailed from the UK on the 20th December 2013 and arrived at Tema Port on 17th January 2013. The shipment included fencing, lighting towers and generators, as well as the holding bolts for the steel fame for the central hub building for the Dodowa site.
With generous support from NMS Infrastructure Limited, the Tag Rugby Trust and the GRFU trained over 40 local teachers and Ghanaian rugby officials in Tag Rugby, and have entered eight schools in Madina to bring the sport to a whole new generation.

July 2014 – Groundwork starts on the Fomena Hospital Site
The local District Assembly starts work on preparing the site in anticipation of handover to the project team.
August 2014 – Sod-cutting Ceremony at the Fomena Site
August began with a sod-cutting ceremony at Fomena marking the beginning of the hospital build. The ceremony was well attended by the District Assembly, Chiefs and community members and medical students.
September 2014 – NMS opens new London office in Mayfair
NMS opened a new office in London’s Bond Street. With an expanding team, the office provides a central location close to our design partners and consultants, as work continues on the Ghana District Hospitals project.
November 2014 – Dodowa District Hospital Site taking shape
The Dodowa District Hospital Site is now taking shape with the main building having most of its roof on and the foundations for the wards being finished off. The hospital staff accommodation is also developing nicely.
February 2015 – Official Sod Cutting at the Kumawu District Hospital Site
The official sod cutting for the Kumawu District Hospital Site took place on Thursday 19th February 2015. The event was well attended by the District Assembly and progress at the site is moving well.
March 2015 – A Successful Stakeholder Engagement at Abetifi
A stakeholder engagement for the Abetifi District Hospital site was successful, lively and well attended by Traditional Leaders and District Assembly representatives, who all expressed support for the project.
May 2015 – Fomena District Hospital Site Visible On Google Earth
The second of our District Hospital sites is now visible on Google Earth! Work on the site is progressing well, so after seeing the Dodowa Hospital site appear on Google Earth last year, this is great to see.
July 2015 – 2015 Architects for Health Annual Design Awards Winners
At the European Healthcare Design Congress 2015, The Best International Project for Outstanding Design in Healthcare was awarded for the Ghana District Hospital Project to TP Bennett, Masterplanners and Architects.
The award recognises the designs of the Ghana District Hospital Project – an outstanding healthcare building located in a place outside the UK. This is the prestigious aware and beat stiff competition from the other shortlisted projects.
August 2015 – Familiarization Training
A 4-week training programme is taking place at the old Dodowa District Hospital in order to induct the 157 clinical staff to the new hospital equipment they’ll be using when they move to the new hospital, to promote safe and effective use of the medical equipment and to understand Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), user manuals and maintenance requirements.
Feedback from the training has been extremely encouraging from all the trainees.
September 2015 – Upgrade to Ayenyah Community Health Clinic
The Ayenyah community health clinic located 5 miles from Dodowa District Hospital was donated to the community by the charity OAfrica founded in October 2002 by Lisa Lovatt-Smith. The facility serves the local rural community to provide basic health provision including vaccination of local school children.
With the help of NMSI and the Dodowa site manager, Francis Yore, the project involved taking down the previous building and erecting a new facility ensuring a long term sustainable solution and a more functional area for the nurses to administer health care whilst upgrading some of the equipment.
From beginning to end, the project took 2 weeks to complete and was led by volunteers James Hsu and William Hsu (Sons of NMSI’s Deputy Chairman Fred Hsu), Charlie Stevens and Jeremy Elmhirst.
June 2016 – Dodowa Hospital has First Open Clinic
The Shai Osudoku Hospital in Dodowa held its first open Diabetes Outpatient Clinic, marking the Ghana Health Services’ bold first steps into these new modern facilities.
July 2016 – NMSI voted Ai African Social Developer of the Year
NMSI, the prime contractor on the Built to Care project, won the Ai African Social Project Developer of the Year Award, on account of its work on new District Hospitals in Ghana.
November 2020 – Presidential Visit to Fomena
President Akufo-Addo, together with the Hon. Minister of Health, Kwaku Agyemang Manu, local MPs and traditional Chiefs visited the 120-bed facility at Fomena Hospital to inspect the progress made.
August 2022 – Minister of Health Tours Project
The Minister of Health and other representatives visited the three project sites in August and were pleased to report good progress on the project.
March 2023 – Substantial Completion of Takoradi
March 2023 saw the substantial completion of Takoradi, with minor snagging works and final inspections starting.
